Identity Reconfigurations in Hispanic American Literature: A Panoramic Look

Resumen

The problem of Hispanic American identity has been one of the main concerns of critics and writers. Since the continent was characterized as the seat of heaven on Earth, identified now as an exuberant place of abundance, now as a wild place of primitive inhabitants, until the deconstruction of the very notion of identity in contemporary criticism, the issue has suffered constant negotiations and transformations, not exempt of tension and controversy within the intellectual community. The objective of this text is to offer a panoramic view and revision of the different periods in which Hispanic-American identity has been intensely discussed, often in conflicting ways.
